Biography...

Edward Swindell is a trombonist, teacher and musical arranger.

bulletWork Experience:

Ed is currently the trombone tutor at Trent College, in Nottingham.

As a soloist Ed is currently touring the UK with a series of recitals for trombone and organ.

Edward is also an experienced orchestral trombonist. He has done extra work with the Hallé Orchestra, in Manchester and he regularly plays with many of the countries other professional as well as semi-professional orchestras.

As an active chamber musician, Ed is a founding member and principal trombone of Essentially Brass and he plays principal trombone for Derventio Brass. He has also deputised in the Hallé Brass Quintet.

Performing in a lighter style, Ed plays with the successful function band, the Soulcats as well as performing in the pit for several nearby theatrical companies.

He works as an arranger, specialising in music for small brass ensembles and his arrangements are available from Warwick Music. His own compositions include film music for Double Jack Films.

Edward is an experienced teacher, before accepting his current teaching position at Trent College, he worked for several years as a peripatetic brass specialist for the Derbyshire City & County Music Service.

Edward has recently completed a Master's in Performance at the Royal Northern College of Music, in Manchester. At the RNCM he studied with Christopher Houlding, Andrew Berryman and Sue Addison. As well as the training Edward received as an instrumentalist during this period of study, he also undertook two major research projects. Firstly, he  researched the works of the English composer, Sir William Walton and secondly, he undertook an action research project, which focussed on the effect of teaching music to children with specific learning difficulties.

Edward is also a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he studied trombone with Mark Eager, Roger Cutts and Christopher Mowat.

Edward Swindell started playing the trombone at the age of seven. When he was thirteen he was awarded a music scholarship to study at Trent College. As a youngster, he played in several youth orchestras including: the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra, the Nottingham Youth Orchestra and Edward was principal trombone of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain.

One of his greatest musical influences has always been singing, which he pursued keenly as a boy. He started at an early age in church choirs, later, as a baritone at college, he studied with Gareth Rhys-Davies and sang with the BBC National Chorus of Wales.
